Welcome to LibraryPAC.org and thank you for visiting!

Millicent Library, Fairhaven, MA

"In Massachusetts, use of our libraries is at an all time high with public library borrowing of materials increasing for the 10th consecutive year in 2009, with more than 57 million items transported across the state through regional delivery services." - MA Board of Library Commissioners

As the increase in library use continues, not only in Massachusetts but all over our country, state governments are cutting library funding - in some cases more than 35%.

LibraryPAC.org is a non-partisan, political action committee (PAC).

The mission of LibraryPAC.org is to support financially and to help elect state and federal legislators who will use their influence to fund libraries and library programs in your state and across the United States.

In Massachusetts, the proposed fiscal year 2011 budget for the state library is 37.2% lower than it was in 2009. Current funding of libraries are at 2001 budget levels and decreasing. Some libraries are even losing their certification and closing their doors. Such drastic cuts to statewide library budgets will have a significant impact on programs and services located at your local library. These are programs and services that you, your children, or your family may be using right now.

Services that are threatened by budget cuts include:

  • Work and career counseling programs designed to help people get jobs
  • Access to technology that is used more now than ever as so many residents have lost jobs and cannot afford computer and Internet resources
  • Regional Library Systems, which coordinate the delivery of millions of library books, CDs and DVDS to residents and school libraries throughout states and provide electronic research materials integral to learning and scholarship
  • Literacy programs that empower legal immigrants through language instruction along with strong school and academic libraries that foster learning, support curriculum, and materials for a growing English as a second language population. Library sponsored Homework Centers for students of all ages and abilities. Story hours for toddlers and children, summer reading programs, and educational programs for residents of all ages
  • In Massachusetts, the Commonwealth's Talking Book Libraries are the libraries for 22,000 active users who are legally blind or physically unable to use printed books. The Talking Book Library in Worcester, MA and the Perkins Talking Book & Machine Lending Agency are in the midst of an historic transition of taking books from cassette tape to the new digital talking books

As a tax payer, you deserve to have your hard earned dollar put to good causes, ones that support education, literacy, advancements in reading technology, and in helping people get back to work during these hard times. Your local library has been providing these services for years. Let's work together to elect state and federal representatives who will fight to use our tax payer dollar wisely and continue to support our local libraries and the communities they represent - and while we've at it, let's vote out those who won't.

Your very generous donations will be allocated to help elect officials who have a track record of fiscal responsibility and of supporting their local libraries.

Mismanagement of your hard earned dollar must no longer be tolerated. Support LibraryPAC today.
